Safe Use Of An AED

Qualsafe Awards (QA) Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) – Qualsafe Awards Recognised (QAR)

Who should take this course?

The qualification is designed for people who have a specific responsibility at work, or in voluntary and community activities, to use an AED when dealing with an emergency situation.

Course Overview

This course leads to the Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) certificate. The qualification has been designed to provide learners with the skills needed to administer safe, prompt and effective basic life support and use of an AED safely in emergency situations.

Entry Requirements

There are no formal entry requirements but in order to benefit from the learning, Learners should possess communication skills sufficient to allow them to address the assessment requirements of the qualification.

However, the content can be delivered as a stand alone (3-4 hrs) or a ‘bolt-on’ (1 1⁄2 hour) course. Therefore, if the training is being delivered as a ‘bolt on’, evidence of Adult CPR competency must be obtained during an adjacent Qualsafe Awards qualification, such as the QA Level 2 Award in Emergency First Aid at Work (QCF) or the QA Level 3 Award in First Aid at Work (QCF), otherwise the CPR Practical Assessment record must still be completed.

Course Duration

It is recommended that the minimum face to face time that the Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (QAR) qualification should be delivered in is 3 hours as a stand alone course (including a break) or 1.5 hours (excluding breaks) as a bolt on to other first aid training that covers and assesses Adult CPR.

Course Content

  • Chain of survival
  • Cardio Pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR)*
  • Safety considerations in the use of an AED
  • Safe use of the AED including modifications for a child
  • *Not required for ‘bolt-on’

Learners are required to complete a practical assessment. Practical skills are assessed by continuous observation by the trainer.

An A5 Qualsafe CPR and AED First Aid Made Easy booklet is provided for each learner.

The QA in Safe Use of an Automated External Defibrillator (AED) QAR Award is valid for a period of 1 year, within which time the Learner will need to re-take the course and assessments in order to remain qualified.
